Live Blog: Leslie Brown and The I AM Foundation in the field at Pokhara, Nepal

Greetings to all friends, family, and supporters of The I AM Foundation!

Yesterday I was invited to visit the EWN-Empowering Women of Nepal-Children’s Center in Pokhara, Nepal.  There are about 22 children living in this center; some have been rescued from domestic servitude, some out of circumstances of poverty and deprivation. All of them are now loved and cared for by this Nepali nonprofit organization: they are fed, clothed, housed, and are attending local schools.

My friend, Helen Gurung and I went to meet the children and gift copies of The I AM! Affirmation Book, and The I AM! Affirmation Book for Teens and Young Adults.   Their faces convey the delight with which they received this wonderful children’s book of power affirmations.  I was very grateful to have the Program Manager, Archana Chhetri, there to translate into Nepali so each child could hear and share the affirmations.  19 girls and two boys living at the Center received the book and happily joined in repeating the words in English: “I AM!…” as we read the affirmations together.

After we recited the affirmations together — ‘I AM Joy — I AM Healthy — I AM Brave!’ — Archana translated, explained, and pointed out the animals, sun, and scenery shown on each page.  The kids flipped the pages back and forth as together we found the page number for the next affirmation.  I showed them the other language at the bottom of the page and told them about my neighbor country, Mexico, where this language, Spanish, is spoken, and children there read this book too.

It is remarkable to think this small book of affirmations for children has gone out all over the world and is now reaching Nepal, where the government, nonprofits, and civil society continue to work towards establishing a society that values and protects children equally, both girls and boys.  The I AM Foundation is becoming a partner with Nepal as we plan for translation and printing of The I AM! Affirmation Book in English and Nepali, for wider distribution around the country. I hope you’ll support The I AM Foundation’s Nepal project; for more information, see The I AM Foundation Website or just call Steve Viglione at 619.297.7010!
